Lavinia Newman BSc FCCA FCMA MCIArb (Mediation) MBACP

Lavinia Newman founded ABDS in 1987, and is an expert on the accounting and business development issues of small and growing, owner-managed businesses. She brings a wealth of commercial experience and an understanding of the challenges for those in business. Lavinia is experienced in advising companies across a wide number of industry sectors in the UK and abroad. She is currently acting for clients in with business dealings in France, Canada and Poland.

Her achievements in recent years have included:

  • running the negotiations and successfully completing the deal for the share buyback for a significantly sized London company with a deal valued at circa £15m;
  • Preparing a case for a minority shareholder where his position had been prejudiced and engaging legal support. Her work here included case management;
  • Acting as an expert in share valuation case where the company had pre-emption rights and one Director was seeking to leave, (a legal referral);
  • Share valuation work for a dispute with HM Revenue & Customs and negotiating successful outcomes;
  • Dealing with business sale from beginning to end, finding competing potential purchasers, negotiation work, engaging an appropriate legal team and case management to a successful retirement outcome.
  • Tax compliance and planning work was undertaken by our tax department as was inheritance tax planning;
  • Assisting with the purchasing of trading premises, appointing valuers, undertaking cash-flows and projected profit and loss accounts and balance sheet and successful presentation to the bank for funding;
  • Applications for the Enterprise Finance Guarantee scheme including preparing business report and statistics and meeting with more than one set of Bankers to find a receptive Bank;
  • Mediation in bank dispute over client's treatment; and
  • Assisting on an ongoing basis the management of business recovery program for a local company where the VAT office PAYE office and HMRC were all “at the door” seeking payment (client is still trading out of this position 2 years on).

She started her career as an investment analyst at City of London stockbrokers Sheppards & Chase and then Dean Witter Reynolds. Later, she moved on to work as an accountant in the gaming industry for the Playboy Club, as well as in the entertainment industry for Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lavinia has also worked for Cartier, the Bond Street jewellers, and in the Head Office of Arthur Guinness Son & Company.

Lavinia has a degree in Management Sciences, specialising in Marketing and Finance, and is qualified as a Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (FCMA) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA). She is an associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrations for Arbitration. She enjoys negotiation, mediation, problem solving and dealing with people.

Over the last 12 months, Lavinia has set up “Wise Owl Counselling” in response for demand for stress related issues that have increased for the business community because of the credit crunch and the current very difficult trading environment. Many business people have found it to be a very stressful time for both those doing the business and for their wife or husband, who is often stressed because they are worried about the consequences and are often onlookers to the problems. They may feel powerless to help which in itself can be very concerning and worrying. “Wise Owl Counselling” offers evening and Saturday sessions. Session allows participants to voice their concerns and worries in a safe and understanding environment.

Lavinia has lived in Hampshire for the last 30 years and is married to a doctor. Lavinia acts as Responsible Officer for a number of our Academy School Clients, and is an active school governor at a local Southampton School.


Stuart Coleman BA (Hons) FCCA

Stuart Coleman joined the firm in August 1999, and is the manager of ABDS’s tax department. Stuart has a degree in accountancy from Southampton Solent University and qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant with ABDS. He has substantial practical experience with the firm’s clients.

Stuart supervises the tax team, undertaking the routine tax compliance and ensuring that the firm’s clients are aware of their responsibilities and comply with them on a timely basis. He also undertakes more specialised tax planning, including inheritance tax planning and tax enquiry work, as well as specialist projects such as business valuations, shareholder and partnership agreements, dispute resolution, statutory, contract and CIS regulation work

Stuart is especially interested in tax planning, particularly retirement and inheritance tax planning and business sale and business valuation, so as to extract the rewards of having built up a business and to retain the hard-earned nest egg for a comfortable retirement

Stuart has lived in Southampton all of his life. He is an avid reader and enjoys watching sport.


Peter Ham BSc(Hons) PhD FCA CTA

Peter Ham is the Director of Audit for Business Development and Solutions Limited. He is responsible for Audit planning and completion, and presenting the finalised audit and any subsequent recommendations.  He trained with Deloitte Haskins & Sells and qualified as FCA and CTA and with a practicing certificate. Prior to joining the team at ABDS is, he work for RH Jeff & Rowe where he prepared the accounts, audit and tax of branches and subsidiaries of public companies and owner managed businesses in an audit department for eight years followed by five years in the general practice department, which also included partnerships and charities.

Following a move to a member firm of the UK 200 Group for thirteen years he continued  with owner managed businesses involving accounts, audits and corporate tax of engineering and vehicle franchise groups of companies with turnovers of up to £137M and 900 employees as well as charities, pension fund accounts, distributors, and an hotel.

More recently, with a member firm of the HAT Group of accountants for five years he did accounts, audits and tax of 20 plus workingmen’s clubs a year and also engineering, retailers and other entrepreneurs and personal tax.

Liz Kennett BSc (Hons) ACA

Audit and Accounts Manager

Liz Kennett joined ABDS in November 2014 after a career break to look after her young family.  Previous to this she was an audit and assurance partner at Deloitte Southampton

She is a chartered accountant and a member of the ICAEW, with over 15 years’ experience of auditing and advising clients across many industry sectors and of varying size from small start-ups to large plcs.

Liz is passionate about understanding her clients’ businesses and ensuring our advice is timely, relevant and adds value. 

She started her career in Birmingham working with many traditional manufacturing businesses.  On moving to Reading she looked after a portfolio of small hi tech businesses, pharmaceutical companies, service organisations and IT businesses. 

In Southampton her clients included many well-known local businesses across many sectors. As well as corporate clients she also has experience of charity and pension fund audits.  Liz has also spent time working in the Czech Republic.

She is a treasurer of two local charities and a trustee of a large Winchester charity.  She spends most of her spare time providing a taxi service to her children but also enjoys walking, swimming, cycling, singing and cooking.


Mike Twomey BA (Hons) DipM MCIM
Marketing Manager

Mike Twomey has over 25 years’ experience in B2B and B2C marketing over a variety of industry sectors. At ABDS he is responsible for business development and retention, web site, social media and PR.

Originally, from the Midlands, he has lived on the south coast virtually continuously since going to University of Portsmouth and Bournemouth University. In his spare time, he is passionate about his football, photography, surfing and the theatre. He also enjoys searching for unusual beers both draught and bottled, but enjoys nothing more than sitting with a glass and a good book while listening to the Rolling Stones
