Hampshire roads to receive major improvement grant.

In plans called the biggest upgrade in the road system for a generation, the government has announced a massive massive £15 billion investment in Britain's road network.

Plans to improve the A31 through the New Forest, the Redbridge roundabout in Southampton and other parts of Hampshire's motorway network are included in these plans.

The A31 at Ringwood will be converted to three lanes after years of complaints about huge tailbacks.

The Redbridge roundabout at the southern end of the M271 in Southampton will be equipped with a dedicated left-turn lane, preventing docks traffic and cruise passengers heading for the port having to queue.

The A31 through the New Forest between the end of the M27 at Cadnan and the Ashley Heath roundabout near Ringwood is one of the most notorious routes in the south for congestion and accidents.

Mike Twomey, Marketing Manager of ABDS comments:
“Other improvements in Hampshire include upgrading junctions’ five to eight of the M27 around the north and east of Southampton and replacing rail bridges across roads on other routes to relieve pressure on the motorway. Some of the M3 slip roads in the Winchester and Eastleigh areas will also be upgraded to allow more vehicles to use them faster. These improvements will hopefully ease the congestion at the peak rush hours and let us all get to and from work easier and safer.”

Plans at a glance:
  • A31: Widening to three lanes at Ringwood.
  • M271/A35: Dedicated left-turn lane for traffic leaving M271 into Southampton.
  • M3 junctions 9-14: Upgraded to smart motorway.
  • M3 junctions 10-14: Improved slip roads.
  • M27 junctions 4-11: Upgraded to smart motorway.
  • M27 junction 10: Improvements to junction layout to serve new Welborne housing development north of Fareham.
  • M27 junctions 5-8: Widening of slip roads.
